Details
A. Walpen AG, Gossau (Switzerland): "Flexibility has
increased enormously with our Speedmaster SM 52."
The family business was founded in 1965 by Anton Walpen.
Even then the family put its trust in Heidelberg products, and this
has not changed. Anton Walpen started out with a Heidelberg Tiegel,
an Original Heidelberg Cylinder and a Heidelberg KORD, later adding
a GTO 52. In 1986, Bonifaz Walpen, one of the three sons, took over
operations. Ten years later Emanuel Walpen also joined the company
and since then the two brothers have managed the family business
together.
The duo is complemented and supported by ten employees and
Monika Walpen - Bonifaz Walpen's wife. She handles prepress,
where no data is processed without being checked in the PDF
workflow in advance, which is extremely important as plate imaging
is done externally at a CTP-service shop. Monika Walpen is also the
creative mind of the print shop, where, for example, mailings and
advertisements are designed and finished with scented varnish.to
show customers how sensual and inventive printed products can be.
About 25 percent of the turnover at Walpen AG is generated by
single or multi-color envelope printing. Mailings, advertising and
business stationary round off the job range. The shop is equipped
with a Quickmaster 46-1 (which has already printed over 80 million
sheets), a Speedmaster
SM 52-2-P and a Speedmaster SM 74-2-P. At the end of 2004 a
Speedmaster SM 52-6 was added, which is mostly used for multi-color
advertising or business stationary.
The Walpen brothers have deliberately opted for an expanded
stock range for their Speedmaster SM 52-6, which processes stocks
from 0.03 to 0.6 millimeters. "This feature is important
because we frequently process cardboard. It just gives us more
flexibility," says Bonifaz Walpen.
The Speedmaster SM 52-6 is also used to finish jobs with dispersion coating applied by the printing unit.
Details
The Speedmaster SM 52-6 is used for many different applications at
Walpen AG, not just for special inks. The last printing unit of the
Speedmaster SM 52 is used according to the requirements of
individual jobs. If a protective coating is needed, it applies a
suitable dispersion coating.
"Aside from print varnish (for uncoated paper), we
frequently process dispersion coating (for coated paper) on our six
printing units. Advertising agencies appreciate the non-yellowing
dispersion coating," explains Emanuel Walpen. "For jobs
that need to be cut, creased or perforated, we use the Cito-system,
which also handles the kiss-cutting of self-adhesive-labels, one of
the shop's specialties."
The Quickmaster 46 is mostly used for the production of
envelopes. Multi-color envelopes, however, are printed on the
Speedmaster SM 52-2-P and the Speedmaster SM 52-6. Because of its
high volume of envelope printing, the Walpen AG is the ideal
research and development partner for the B. Walpen Envelope Feeders
company, of which the third Walpen brother is the managing
director.
The Superfeeder was presented at Heidelberg Switzerland AG's Open House in Bern in June 2006.
Details
Envelope production on the Speedmaster SM 52-2-P is supported by
the Superfeeder, which feeds the envelopes non-stop and covers
sizes C6 to B4.
The Superfeeder can also process portrait C6 and C6/5
envelopes. Aside from standard envelope sizes, Walpen AG also
processes special envelopes, which are printed flat on the
Speedmaster SM 74 and then custom made on special machines at a
partner company.
