At last! The new Printmaster GTO 52 five-color press with
perfecting device, numbering and perforating unit, and Prinect
Classic Center was delivered at the start of September 2008.
Following a move to a larger building in March this year, Ulrich
Thomackenstein, Owner of the print shop Ackermann, found the
opportunity to install this new press. It replaced a Printmaster
GTO 52 two-color press that had faithfully served the print shop
for over seven years with an average of 3.5 million prints each
year.
The previous premises, just two streets away, gradually
became too small for office space, paper storage and, most of all,
the machinery. Its equipment comprises three Heidelberg platen
(Tiegel) presses, a Heidelberg cylinder, a Wohlenberg cutter, a
collating machine, a GTO 46 single-color press, and now the newly
installed Printmaster GTO 52 five-color press.
With a total staff of four, Thomackenstein himself also
prints and is now able to do this on the new press. He took over
the business around 13 years ago, and because the name of the
company he acquired - "Ackermann" - was well respected,
this was simply retained.
Beside the printing process, the company Ackermann also
offers finishing such as cutting, simple folding jobs, die cutting,
numbering, perforating, and scoring. Finished print products are
dispatched either by the print shop itself or by a delivery
service.
Thomackenstein opted for a Printmaster GTO 52 five-color
model exhibited at the Heidelberg booth at drupa 2008. The simple,
familiar operation, reliability and price/performance ratio were
key reasons for acquiring the press. "As we were faced with an
increasing number of color sets, and given that we mainly handle
four-color jobs, it was clear we would no longer be investing in a
two-color press," says Thomackenstein. Quite the opposite in
fact, as the fifth unit can now be used for coatings, enabling an
enhanced range of design options and shorter throughput times.
Run lengths can cover anything from around 500 to 15,000
sheets at an average of five jobs a day and with grammages of
between 100 and 200 grams per square meter. This in particular is
where Prinect Classic Center, the remote color and register control
unit, really comes into its own. "The press can be operated
even more effectively and I'm able to cut my setup times
significantly," says a delighted Thomackenstein.
Almost half a million prints were produced on the new press
within the first eight weeks of installation. All types of business
stationery, brochures, and flyers are printed on the Printmaster
GTO 52, mainly for regular customers, including insurance
companies, hospitals, industrial and commercial enterprises, and
advertising agencies.
"We are delighted with the new Printmaster GTO 52 and
particularly value the level of service we got from Heidelberg,
which ensured installation went smoothly and operators soon felt at
home on the new press," says Thomackenstein.
