Germany's First 12-Color Speedmaster Goes into Production at Kohlhammer

06/21/2000

Germany's First 12-Color Sheetfed Offset Press Has Been Installed at W. Kohlhammer Druckerei GmbH + Co., Obertürkheim

Dr. Jürgen Gutbrod, Managing Director of W. Kohlhammer GmbH, welcomed Bernhard Schreier, Chairman of the Management Board of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Hartmut Mehdorn, Chairman of the Management Board of Deutsche Bahn AG, and Dr. Christoph Palmer, Minister of the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg, to the official start-up on 16 June 2000.

"We are one of only a few full-service providers in Baden-Württemberg", stressed Dr. Gutbrod. "The new 12-color press extends our range of products in high-quality offset printing. It will play a central role in future, providing us with extremely flexible production of multicolor publications from very short to long runs." Bernhard Schreier was pleased about the first installation in Europe and assured Kohlhammer that Heidelberg would remain the perfect partner for all printing and related solutions in future. Dr. Palmer congratulated Kohlhammer on its investment in this cutting-edge printing technology and described how the media were now beginning to complement each other more and more. "Web sites, forms and printing will not replace each other," he stated with conviction, "but will complement each other instead".

The print shop in Stuttgart-Obertürkheim is a production facility of the Kohlhammer Group. Of the 650 employees within the Group, around 260 are employed at the two print shops in Obertürkheim and Hechingen. The company employs multi-shift operation. As a loyal Heidelberg customer, Kohlhammer has installed around 100 Heidelberg offset printing units over the last 15 years, estimates the owner, Dr. Jürgen Gutbrod, representing the fourth generation of this family-based company. Print products with numerous special colors, even as many as 19 plus varnish, are no rarity at Kohlhammer. These include sales brochures for the automotive industry which come complete with original color samples. "The decisive argument for investing in a Speedmaster 12-color press was the considerable reduction in setup times made possible by the various automated components in the machine concept," explains Gotthold Bayer, Managing Director of the Kohlhammer printshop.

Long presses on the road to success
The 12-color presses have been specifically designed to meet the needs of the US and European markets. The reliable perfecting technology of the Speedmaster presses, combined with 6/6 printing - true to the motto "One Pass Productivity" - has made this series exceptionally successful. Shorter setup times, greater register accuracy and stable processes mean that even the most demanding motifs can be printed cost-effectively.
