New M-600 Includes Major Speed, Makeready and Waste-Reduction Enhancements

Integrated system with multidrive and Prinect Web Center

Heidelberg will unveil a dramatically enhanced version of the best selling web press in the world at drupa 2004.
A completely revamped M-600 with multidrive, new JDF-compliant control features and a new JF-70 combination folder will print up to 70,000 impressions per hour at the show. The system will include an Ecocool dryer with chill rolls and unique new closed-loop color capabilities completely integrated. Operators will use the Autoplate automatic plate changing option and a new Omni Makeready control feature to demonstrate faster job changeovers with a significant reduction in waste.
"We have retooled one of the most reliable and versatile web press platforms ever designed for higher speeds, faster makereadies and lower waste," according to Werner Albrecht, Heidelberg Web Systems president. "New features make it easier for printers to operate the M-600, achieve sheetfed-like quality, and compete in makeready intensive environments at run lengths well under 10,000 copies."
Heidelberg introduced the 16-page M-600 in 1992 and has installed close to 1,800 printing units in 50 countries. The new version, the M-600 D, extends the top speed to 70,000 impressions per hour and is the first M-600 with multidrive, the new Prinect Web Center control package and the option of an Ecocool dryer.
Multidrive technology improves web tension throughout the speed range of the M-600 D, resulting in fewer web breaks. Independent a.c. motors also reduce maintenance and allow operators to silence individual components for maintenance or makeready without impacting the other components.
The Prinect Web Center includes Omnicon press controls and modules for automated presetting, machine control and data reporting. "We have one, flexible system with all the control features that web printers need to automate operations and to link prepress, production, auxiliary and management systems from Heidelberg and other suppliers," Albrecht explains.
The new Omni Makeready module within the Prinect Web Center automatically converts data from closed-loop color controls for faster and more precise adjustment of ink settings during start-ups. New modules for data reporting and for integrating press performance data into a company's management information system are also available.
The GATF InterTech Award-winning Ecocool dryer, now available for the M-600 D, improves print quality by reducing condensate in the drying and chilling process. New Ecocool features, including integrated closed-loop color control and a unique web remoistening capability, will be presented at drupa.
The JF-70 folder, designed specifically for the new M-600 D, can be automatically preset in less than three minutes and can produce up to 15 different product formats. Heidelberg has also reduced the non-print blanket gap on the new press by three millimeters.
M-600 presses can be installed in one- and two-web configurations and customized with a complete range of optional components and auxiliary systems. Standard features include rigid, cast iron sideframes, in-line cylinder stacks, 15-roll inkers and convertible inking and dampening.
Heidelberg's patented Autoplate option was first introduced on the M-600 in 1995 to reduce makeready times and operator involvement while increasing plate registration accuracy. Ninety percent of M-600 presses sold now include Autoplate.
