Heidelberg supports WorldSkills Competition for printers in
Helsinki
Printing featured for the first time in this year's
WorldSkills Competition, the vocational world championships for
trainees which took place in the Finnish capital Helsinki. The 38th
WorldSkills Competition, which is open to participants no older
than 22, featured 39 hard-fought contests.
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) supported the
"Printing" demonstration contest by providing four
Printmaster PM 52-4 presses and two Polar cutters. In the end,
Jordan Poulain of Belgium was crowned World Champion, having
produced the best results for the jobs requested. Benjamin
Balasunderam (VollherbstDruck, Endingen am Kaiserstuhl, Germany)
came in a respectable second place, followed by Stefan Durrer of
Switzerland. The competitors came from seven countries
(Finland, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and
Germany), as did the judges. Germany was represented on the judging
panel by Karl Kowalczyk, Head of the Print Media Center at
Heidelberg.
The three test jobs - a poster, postcard form and
brochure - were prepared with a considerable amount of support
from the Heidelberg Print Media Center. Both the competitors and
judges also received advance training on the PM 52. The world
championship presses are meanwhile continuing to help train young
printers, with the four Printmaster 52 presses being sold to
Finnish vocational colleges.
The Print Media Academy (PMA) also had an info booth at the
WorldSkills Competition and used the opportunity to make contact
with the organizations and colleges for vocational training
represented in Helsinki. "We are strongly committed to
training within the graphic arts industry," stresses Bernd
Schopp, Head of the PMA. "So there was absolutely no doubt
that we would support such an event designed to promote printing
among the next generation."
The next WorldSkills Competition takes place in Japan in
2007.
