Websdale, Heidelberg & WAM!NET combine resources to win gold
for networking, distribution and print.
In a world first, the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games will see
German athletes receive their daily national newspaper even before
it is printed at home.
A collaboration between Heidelberger Druckmaschinen
Aktiengesellschaft (Heidelberg); German publisher Axel Springer
Verlag (ASV); WAM!NET, a recognised leader of digital content
management and services; and Australia's Websdale Printing means
German athletes at the Olympic Village will be up to date with
what's going on at home - without the delay normally
associated with distributing international newspapers.
Recognising a chance to cheer on the German Olympic Team
'Down Under', ASV approached press manufacturer Heidelberg, which
helped it form a relationship with Sydney-based Websdale Printing
to produce local copies of Bild, Europe's biggest selling daily
newspaper, for athletes and visitors alike. Bild's production files
are sent from Hamberg to Sydney - up to 100 megabytes of
data - via WAM!NET's high speed transportation network, output
using the latest computer-to-plate technology, then printed on a
ten colour, perfecting Heidelberg SM102-10P (Five colours on one
side and five on the other all in one pass of the sheet) - all
in under four hours. According to Scott Telfer, General Manager,
Websdale Printing, responsible for printing the daily newspaper,
the smooth integration of the WAM!NET and Heidelberg workflow means
production time is much swifter and efficient.
"We receive files from Hamburg between 5.00 a.m. to 5.30 a.m.
each morning, and the print run varies between 3,500 to 5,000
copies, of either 12, 14 or 16 pages per issue. Without the fast
file transmission from ASV via WAM!NET's global high speed network,
we would not meet our distribution deadline."
Added Clare Gillespie, Marketing Manager, WAM!NET Australia:
"WAM!NET and Heidelberg enable ASV to transform its workflow into a
secure, fast global production platform by using WAM!NET's private
managed network to distribute files for local printing by a
Heidelberg press. This 'distribute and print' model saves clients
time and money, compared to shipping printed material to multiple
destinations."
According to Greg Grace, Speedmaster Product Manager,
Heidelberg Australia, the Heidelberg Prinergy workflow utilised by
Websdale Printing means there are no surprises once the file is
retrieved from WAM!NET's global network, imposed and proofed.
"Presses can continue to run the high quality colour expected
from Heidelberg reproduction and colour management software from
computer to plate."
The WAM!NET/Heidelberg Distribute and Print model means
publisher ASV saves time and money eliminating the expenses of
shipping already printed materials to multiple destinations. About
