Gabriel Gruener scholarship 2000 for committed reporters
Heidelberg - For the second time, Heidelberger
Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is supporting the Gabriel Gruener
scholarship, which enables young journalists to realize and publish
a report about any subject they wish. The scholarship is named
after "Stern" reporter Gabriel Gruener. He and his
colleagues, Stern photographer Volker Kraemer and translator Senol
Alit, were tragically killed in June 1999 in Kosovo.
Teams consisting of a copywriter and a photographer can apply
for the scholarship, which amounts to DM 10,000. Examples of past
work (text and photographs) plus an exposé of the subject to
be reported on must be submitted by October 15, 2000. In November
this year, a panel of judges will decide which idea is to be turned
into reality. The panel of judges comprises renowned personalities
from the worlds of politics and journalism such as Hans Koschnick
(former Bosnia correspondent for the Federal Government), Ingrid
Kolb (Head of the Henri Nannen school), Gilles Peress (photographer
with the Magnum picture agency, New York) and Alexander Smoltczyk
(Editor of Spiegel Reporter). The winning team must have completed
its report by 31 July 2001 at the latest.
Heidelberg's sponsorship of the Gabriel Gruener
scholarship is a further continuation of its commitment to
journalism. Last May, the solution provider for the graphic arts
industry was the main sponsor of the "Press Freedom
Award", which was awarded by the International Press Institute
(I.P.I) as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations in Boston.
Fifty heroes of press freedom were honored at the ceremony.
