Heidelberg Expands Area of Application of Speedmaster SM 52 with Anicolor Inking Unit Technology

05/28/2008

  • Pantone spot colors now supported
  • Pantone spot colors also supported by perfecting presses with up to ten printing units
  • Separate "Anicolor" area in Hall 1 at drupa
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is expanding the applications of the Speedmaster SM 52 with Anicolor inking unit technology to include spot colors. This means that the benefits of Anicolor - such as fast inking up, low paper waste, high stability over the entire production run, and exceptional print quality - are now also available when using spot colors. Heidelberg has finely tuned its Saphira Anicolor spot colors based on Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) to the Anicolor technology. Optimized basic colors are used for mixing the individual color tones. These exhibit an ideal response to the temperature changes of the screen roller. Since Anicolor always applies the same thickness of ink, it offers technical advantages over the conventional PMS system. Powder consumption can also be cut and drying accelerated.

The Anicolor press is an attractive solution for both cutting-edge print shops working with small formats and large businesses with a growing need to turn around high-quality short runs quickly.

"Our Speedmaster SM 52-5+L with Anicolor technology enables us to produce far more orders every day than we can do with a conventional press. The Anicolor inking unit, which we also use for processing spot colors, applies a thinner ink layer and achieves fast and even inking - even for jobs with low ink consumption. This is vital when working with spot colors," confirms Alexandra Fay from Druckhaus Engelhardt und Bauer in Karlsruhe.

Long perfectors now also support spot colors
Heidelberg presented a Speedmaster SM 52 ten-color press with a perfecting device and Anicolor short inking unit at IGAS 2007 in Tokyo. Pantone spot colors are now also supported on these presses. The press combines the benefits of printing both sides of the sheet in one pass with all the advantages of Anicolor - including extremely fast setup of the double-sided printing forms and low paper waste. Throughput times are shortened, since there is no longer any waiting time for drying and no need for intermediate storage.

Separate "Anicolor" area in Hall 1 at drupa
At drupa 2008 in Düsseldorf, Heidelberg will be presenting the Anicolor short-inking unit technology in a dedicated area of Hall 1. A Speedmaster SM 52-4+L and Speedmaster SM 52-10-P will be used to demonstrate a wide range of applications covering 4/4 printing, varnishing, dispersion coating, and spot colors.

Visitors to the Speedmaster SM 52-4+L will be able to experience exceptionally short makeready times and fast finishing with full-area coating. The Speedmaster SM 52-10-P Anicolor will be showcasing its credentials as the fastest solution for double-sided printing.

Printing with Anicolor creates less waste and is more eco-friendly
Heidelberg introduced Anicolor inking unit technology on a Speedmaster SM 52 four-color press at IPEX 06. Hardly any startup sheets are required - typically just 20 sheets, depending on the image. This means up to 90 percent less startup waste. Several tons of paper can easily be saved each year - a fact that also benefits the environment.

The fact that no ink zone settings are required cuts makeready times by up to 40 percent, a saving that can increase press capacity by up to 25 percent or even more with the right kind of run structures.

This extends the benefits of offset printing to even the shortest of runs as it offers much improved production margins. These benefits also still apply to longer runs. The major plus point of the Speedmaster SM 52 with Anicolor inking unit lies in the fact that it employs the tried-and-tested Alcolor dampening system and therefore uses conventional printing plates. The more standardized the printing process - with Print Color Management, for example - the better the strengths of Anicolor can be exploited.
